Hi, my name is Delali Adwoa Attakey. I
am a 37-year old single mother born in
Suhum, a town in the Eastern Region
of Ghana. Currently, I stay at Ashaley
Botwey, Accra.
I have always dreamed of owning a
business in catering services—cake
making and sugar-craft, but financial
resource to acquire the skill and toolset
was a challenge. A family member
informed me about the support being
offered by the GIZ/Ghanaian-German
Center for Jobs, Migration, and
Re-integration. So, I registered my
request with the center. The center,
through ADRA, has supported me to
acquire skills training in cake making
and sugar-craft at EKGS, a catering
school in Accra.
So far, the training has been very
insightful and beneficial. I have not
completed my training but I am getting
contracts to do cakes for clients’
weddings, birthday celebrations, among
others. I had no prior knowledge about
cake making but through GIZ-iRISE
Project, I have the confidence to say
that no matter how complicated a client
wants his/her cake designed, I can do it
and even exceed the client's
expectations.
I must say that the training has not been
without a challenge. The coming in of
COVID-19 distorted the training
schedule. I was supposed to complete
the training by July, 2020 but due to the
measures taken by the government of
Ghana to prevent the spread of the
virus, the school had to close down for
a while. All other things being equal, I
will graduate in December, 2020.
