Ghana recorded its first two confirmed cases
of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) on
March 12, 2020. By March 25, 2020, the
Ministry of Health (MoH) had confirmed 68
cases with three (3) deaths. A great majority of
the confirmed cases were Ghanaians, who
returned home from affected countries. The
others included nationalities of Norway,
Lebanon, China, and the UK.
Subsequently, the Ghana Medical
Association held a presser to confirm the
worrisome nature of the trend of
community spread and the inadequate
capacity in terms of logistics and human
resources of the nation’s health system to
deal with the pandemic. The Association,
together with the Ghana Health Service
(GHS), called for logistical
support—medical supplies (test kits,
PPEs, consumables, etc.) to manage the
situation.
Through the COVID-19 Initial Response
Project, ADRA partnered with the Ghana
Adventist Health Service (GAHS) and
GHS to provide logistical support to the
health facilities at the frontline of the
battle against COVID-19. The facilities
included Ga East Municipal Hospital,
Suntreso Government Hospital, Kumasi
South Regional Hospital, and 29 GAHS
hospitals and clinics.
